BLAST FROM THE PAST by Tiffany Dickinson Samanthite #3 Mulder drifted in and out of the gray area between sleep and awake. By all rights he shouldn't have been tired. It was only 8:00 and his day had been uneventful, but for some odd reason every part of him cried out for sleep. For the last hour he had been sitting on the couch fighting off the fatigue but it was a battle he was destined to lose. He slipped a little farther into the grey limbo. A sharp rapping on the door jolted him back to reality. He got up and staggered to the door expecting to see Scully there. Instead he found a package at his doorstep. He picked up the parcel and brought it into the apartment. After a thorough inspection of the box to make sure it wasn't anything dangerous, he tore off the shipping tape and opened it. Inside was a teddy bear with a note attached. "This is Samantha's bear!" he exclaimed as he looked the stuffed animal over. He recognized it because it was missing it's left ear.. (He had torn it off during a fight with his sister.) It also had a scrached eye where it had fallen to the pavement in their neighborhood. Fighting back the tears, he read the note that had been tied to it's arm. It read: "FOX, I'M AM IN TERRIBLE TROUBLE. PLEASE HELP ME. THE BEAR WILL LEAD YOU TO ME. AND PLEASE, FOR OUR SAFETY , COME ALONE. LOVE ALWAYS, SAMANTHA." He scrutinized the bear in an attempet to understand the message. That's when he noticed that the thread on it's stomach was ripped. He carefully opened to find a small square object. He touched it and suddenly everything went black. ************************************************************ Mulder woke up with a throbing headache and blury vision. He rubbed his eyes and looked at his surroundings. He could make out the outline of trees and a house, but no details. After a few minutes his eyes cleared and he knew where he was. He was in his parents back yard. He was sitting the the yard of his childhood home. From his position he could see his old bedroom window. The same window that Sam has floated out of. That's when he remembered why he was here. Then, the back door of the house opened and a small girl came running out. "Fox! Wanna go play in the woods?" It was Samantha, just as he remembered her. "Sam? Is it really you?" "Of coarse it is, silly. Who else would it be?" That's when he reallized that he was a kid again. He had gone back in time somehow. It was the bear that had taken him back...... Suddenly he lost his train of thought and forgot what he was talking about. The last thing he remembered was falling out of the tree and landing flat on his back. It had taken the wind out of him but he was alright. "Sure, Sam. Let's go." ************************************************************ The two children spent the day playing in the woods near the house. they even managed to build a small fort out of branches and twigs that they had found. Still, even with all the fun they were having, Fox knew something was wrong. He had the feeling that there was something he had to do. Whatever it was, he had forgotten, so it couldn't have been too important. "Fox, I think I hear Mom calling. It must be dinner time." "Comming, Sam." He climed out of the tree he was in and ran with his sister back to the house. ************************************************************ The rest of the day past rather uneventfully. They had eaten dinner and then setteled down to do some homework. Later on their parents had gone out leaving Fox in charge of Samantha. The kids had played a few games and gotten in a few fights. All in all, a day like any other day Fox could remember. Still, there was something he was forgetting. There was something he had to do. There was something that was gonna happen. "Time for bed, Sam," he told his sister who was seated on the floor playing with her stuffed bear. "Come on. Put the bear away." "But Fox! I'm not tired yet!" "Too bad! Give me the bear Sam." She refused and a fight insured, resulting in Fox ripping off the bear's ear. "Now look what you've done!" Sam cried, examining the severed ear. "You should have gone to bed when I told you. Here if I give you something will you go to sleep?" He rummaged through his pockets and found a small marble block. "Here, you can have this." "What is that?" she asked, taking it from him. "I don't know. I don't even know where I got it." Samantha turned the small square over in her hand. That's when the light came. ************************************************************ Mulder woke up with a such a jerk that he fell off the couch. Through bleary eyes he looked around his apartment. "It must have been a dream," he thought out loud. Tears came to his eyes as he remember the dream that had seamed so real. Then his door buzzer went off. He picked himself up off of the floor. For some odd reason hs back seamed really sore. He figured he must have hurt it by falling off the couch. He stumbled to the door and opened. A woman stood in the door that he was sure he hadn't met before. And yet, she seamed so familliar...... "Hello, Fox." "Samantha?" They embraced in a long hug. Over her should, Mulder could see the teddy bear sitting in the hallway. THE END
